Welcome to the official campaign website for Josh Taveras, candidate for New York's 2nd Congressional District. I’m Josh Taveras, and I’m running to bring real change to our community because I’ve lived the struggles many of us face every day.
I was born in Bayshore, New York, and grew up in the vibrant community of Copiague, which I proudly call my home. As a first-generation Dominican American, I’ve experienced the challenges and triumphs that come with building a better life in this country. Copiague is where I went to school, where I worked my first job, and where I developed a deep love for our community. It’s a town like no other, and I carry its values and spirit with me every step of the way.
Life hasn’t been easy for me—and that’s why I’m running. When I was just six years old, my mother’s battle with Huntington’s disease meant she could no longer care for me. I was raised by my aunt in informal kinship care, navigating a childhood shaped by financial hardship and emotional struggles. When I was 16, my father tragically passed away in a boating accident, a loss that profoundly changed my life. On top of that, I came out as gay during my youth, facing rejection and isolation from those I needed most. Despite these obstacles, I graduated in the top of my high school class and went on to earn a degree in Political Science from Stony Brook University.
I turned my hardships into a commitment to fight for others. From a young age, I’ve been politically active—whether protesting against gun violence, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, or speaking out for immigrants and working-class families like mine. I’ve seen how policies and systems often fail the most vulnerable among us, and I’m determined to make a difference.
As your representative, I’ll fight tirelessly for gun control, climate action, women’s rights, immigration reform, and equality for all. I know what it’s like to feel overlooked by the system, and I’m here to ensure no one in our district feels that way again. Together, we can create a future where opportunity, justice, and compassion are at the forefront of every decision we make.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Let’s build a brighter tomorrow for New York’s 2nd District—together.
Throughout my life, I have been actively involved in advocating for the rights of the underserved, standing up against injustice, and promoting positive change in the community. My experiences, both personal and political, have shaped my commitment to ensuring that everyone—regardless of background, identity, or financial situation—has a voice and an opportunity to thrive.
Political Involvement and Advocacy
From a young age, I became deeply engaged in political activism. As a high school student, I participated in protests for Trayvon Martin and organized walkouts to advocate for stricter gun laws. These early experiences instilled in me the belief that change is possible when we stand together and speak out against injustice. Over the years, I’ve continued to fight for progressive causes that matter most to the people in my district.
Engaging with Communities
I have always believed in the power of grassroots organizing. Whether it's attending local town halls or volunteering for community-driven initiatives, I’ve made it a priority to meet people where they are. As a proud member of the Dominican community in Copiague, I have worked alongside local leaders and organizations to strengthen the bonds within our diverse neighborhoods. I know firsthand the challenges we face, and I’ve made it my mission to help amplify the voices of those who need it the most.
Connections with Political Leaders and Advocates
My passion for politics has been further fueled by my personal interactions with some of the most prominent political figures and activists in the world. Through my involvement with organizations and educational programs, I had the privilege of meeting Carl Wilkins, the last American to remain in Rwanda during the genocide, as well as Karen Kormatau, the daughter of Fred Korematsu, and Mary Beth Tinker, the student who fought for free speech in schools. These encounters deepened my understanding of the power of activism and social justice, and reinforced my belief that standing up for what is right is essential to creating lasting change.
Climate Change and Sustainability
As an advocate for environmental sustainability, I have participated in several initiatives aimed at reducing our carbon footprint. I have been involved with local environmental organizations such as Covanta Going Green and other grassroots movements that promote clean energy and environmental justice. I believe that protecting our planet is not just a political issue—it’s a moral imperative that affects every single one of us, and I’m committed to fighting for policies that ensure a sustainable future for our children.
Commitment to LGBTQ+ Rights and Women’s Equality
Growing up as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have always been driven by the need to ensure equal rights for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. I have been involved in local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, working toward greater protections and equality. Similarly, I stand in solidarity with women’s rights organizations, fighting for reproductive rights, gender equality, and an end to gender-based violence.
A Voice for Immigrants
As the son of Dominican immigrants, I understand the struggles of families who seek to build a better life in this country. I have worked with immigrant advocacy groups to push for comprehensive immigration reform and policies that provide a pathway to citizenship, protect workers’ rights, and ensure that immigrants can contribute to this nation without fear of deportation or discrimination.
